Spiced Pear Chutney Recipe

A spicy surprise with a fruity taste

A fruity chutney with a hint of spice.


6 pears; peeled, cored, and sliced
½ cup of raisins
¼ cup of onion, peeled and chopped
½ cup of cider vinegar
¾ cup of loosely-packed light brown sugar
1 tablespoon of garlic, chopped
½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper
¼ cup of sweet red pepper, chopped
½ teaspoon of salt
3 tablespoons of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped

Recipe Instructions

Cook the ingredients.
Bring the vinegar and sugar to the boil in a saucepan. Add all the ingredients except the pears and simmer over a low heat for 5 minutes. Add the pears and simmer for another 5 minutes and then remove from the heat.

To finish.
Let the chutney cool for 15 – 20 minutes and then transfer it into a container. It can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

    After adding the pears, I added some enough cider vinegar to cover the pears. Then I added 1/2 cup of dark muscovado sugar, stirred it in then brought the pear chutney to the boil and simmered for 1/2 hour, until it thickened. It now looks like pear chutney!
